The type II structure allows the shell to confine only one of the charge carriers (electrons/holes). As to be demonstrated below, the recombination of the electron-hole pair at the heterojunction can be engineered to be very efficient although the radiative transitions are spatially indirect. Such emission is in the wavelength range not achievable by either of the original semiconductors alone. In literature, tunable emission energies in the visible to near-infrared (NIR) spectral range have been reported. The new structure of CdTeSeS make the QDs more tunable for PL emission from 650 nm to over 900 nm. And the new type-II dots are well controlled in the monodispersibility which gives a good optical performance such as higher quantum yields and reliability.
Extensive investigations have been directed towards type II nanocrystals because of their NIR emission, this is important for biological applications where absorption in the tissue is minimal, making it practical to use NIR emitting nanocrystals as bioprobes. Rigorous studies have allowed complete image guidance for in vivo imaging applications, and with proper surface modifications, one could possibly provide a better circulating lifetime. It still remains a major challenge to produce water soluble nanocrystals with high PL QY that are stable for in vivo applications. Other applications include light conversion for lighting or solar cells. The IR dots could convert the visible light to IR light which allows a sensor, such as Si, to have a higher efficiency.
