Happy World Quantum Day!

Happy World Quantum Day!

Today’s date denotes 4.14, the rounded version of Planck’s constant (4.1356677×10⁻¹⁵ eV·s) which is a key physical constant in quantum mechanics. Planck’s constant is essential to understanding the properties of quantum dots.

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals with unique optical and optoelectronic properties that are strongly dependent on nanocrystal size due to quantum mechanical effects. Planck’s constant is crucial to the determination and understanding of these unique properties. For example, Planck’s constant is used in the Brus equation, which describes the band gap energy of quantum dots.

Today’s celebration takes place during International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, a year-long celebration of quantum science and technology designated by the United Nations General Assembly. Today (and this year!) we celebrate the science that makes the synthesis of our quantum dots possible!
