The Surface Science of Nanocrystals

Understanding the surface chemistry of nanoparticles is essential to choosing the right product for your research and development needs. “The surface science of nanocrystals” by Michael A Boles, Daishun Ling, Taeghwan Hyeon, and Drmitri V Talapin is an informative review article about the importance of surface chemistry in nanocrystal design. The authors describe the surface properties of nanocrystals and demonstrate how ligands can modify the surface properties of semiconductor quantum dots using cadmium selenide (CdSe) and lead sulfide (PbS) QDs as examples. They explain that ligands are not only essential in the synthesis of nanocrystals, but also in their applications such as biomedical imaging or solar cell development because ligand exchange allows for further customization of nanocrystals.
